I'm alive, which at one point I thought was questionable.... So. Engage your rant filters, activate particulate shields. All the hoo-ha about this wonderful aftermarket, super-duper gun tube, and it's got a wee problem. I took it out of its packaging last night to get some touchy-feely in, and was having way too much fun ogling the fancy muzzle brake, jamb nut and lock rings, all of which thread on, and looked for the very prominent and noticeable groove machined into the top rear of the gun tube, and it's not there. Big fail on RB's part, big fail. I. Am. Crushed. I thought RB was supposed to be the end-all, whiz-bang best.

I got a reply to my e-mail to RB overnight, they said they know about the groove but that it would have been too expensive to reproduce. Good for them that they answered promptly, but I would have paid for the groove.

Strange attitude by RB - surely they must realise why people buy their barrels for the price of a small kit, and that most modellers would not mid spending a couple of quid extra for an accurate one? I'd go as far as claiming green is the ONLY colour Thumbs Up! - 4BO to be precise lol

Groovin' on the green. Makes me wonder how much would a groove have cost, or how much would it have added to a sub-$10 part?

Groovin' on the green. Makes me wonder how much would a groove have cost, or how much would it have added to a sub-$10 part? Considering these are turned aluminum, I imagine it would be enough to impact the total production cost to reduce their profit margin and/or require a price increase that the market wouldn't bear for this type of barrel. An extra machining step for each barrel that requires precision and time (possibly even having to be done by hand?) are always killers when it comes to manufacturing costs for something like this!

Probable..... So I got the razor saw out, taped up the barrel and very carefully started cutting the groove. It's hard to see, but it's there, and will pop after weathering. It's a long tube....

Wow, two weeks! Well, since the Super Sherman is whizzing along towards completion, this one got a little love in all the right places recently. I got a gloss coat on the hull, allied the few decals and shot more gloss over them. Then hull and turret got some flat and a very dark gray sludge wash. I have the wash scrubbed off of the hull, not the turret in the following pic: And below, the wash on the tracks and wheels: I did a quick read, in Belton Cooper's book, about the arrival and modification of the "Super", and I may leave off the mantlet armor, since from the way Mr. Cooper describes the process, the "bat wings" were added almost immediately after the mantlet armor was, due to the fact that they were aware of the balance issues from the git-go. Besides, I like it better that way.

Super Pershing is looking good there Russ, nothing like a big old gun to equalize the situation!

Yeah, a select (very) few US tankers finally got to bring a GUN to a gun-fight. I finally picked up another HB "Super" kit, don't know if I want to do it "full-boat", as it actually saw action, or do the tank pre-conversion. I'm leaning towards the latter, it's kind of neat-looking, with a short barrel and no muzzle brake. I just need to find the book I have with the pic of it. Anyway, headlight lenses are just about done, last layer of Micro Crystal Clear went on this morning, so the gun rest, dust and the one fig will finish it.
