You could paint the forward portion of the cowl before attaching and mask around that instead. A thought...

Man, after putting all that work into that engine and its display then not having it fit right would have made me put it back on the stand and work up the kit engine instead. A shame to cover that baby up. It would make a nice showpiece alongside the finished model. Great job no matter what though.

As you can see by the photos below, I may be many things but I'm rarely accused of being sane.  While not very thick, the inside of the cowl has depressions for rocker arm clearance for the kit engine. I started grinding inside and as along as I didn't go any further then the depth of the depressions I knew I wouldn't go through. Still with that I needed to take down the rocker arm covers a bit and then the engine fit. I was going to paint the bare resin black again but you can't see it at all.  There's a choice for the center section of the cowl flaps for an opening or full flaps all around. Right or wrong for the bird I am doing I am going to exercise some artist license and going full flappage. More to see inside that way.    I've figured a way to put the nose together without the engine. I am going to take plastic card and make a tube that fits over the exhausts on the fire wall and"mount" the cowl pieces to that. Masking the interior will be a snap then. You know the old expression, "Timing is everything"? Here's some bad timing. This incredible P-61 was posted on HS recently. Take a look at that engine. It's an Eduard Brassin resin/PE engine that's pretty darn nice. 1 set, specifically made to fit the Tamiya kit and about 1/2 the price of the 2 Vector sets together. Yeah, as I said, bad timing. As of a few minutes ago at the top of page 2 P-61 PW R-2800The Eduard setJust a few days and I would still have my R2800 on its stand in the museum  |

Well I'm glad you got it sorted out  Even if it was bad timing...it looks wonderful in there.  That P-61 is freakin' unbelievable...when I grow up I want to build models like that... |

Nice solution/workaround Marc! Too bad about the timing...but now you know. I never realized that the Corsair and P-61 shared the same engines. My grandmother worked in the assembly plants for P-61s, she specialized in hydraulics line installations...and in an even odder coincidence, my neighbor across the street when I was growing up was a P-61 pilot during WWII. Always made me wonder if he flew in one of the planes she worked on.

You're right Bill, now I know. I guess I'll just have to do another Corsair. The other bad timing that can put another F4U on the bench is Xtradecal just released shett for the -1A for some RNZAF birds and I really like one of them. I am considering putting my Fundekal sheet on Ebay and get the Xrtadecal sheet. That would have been a coincidence indeed. Both of them get another shot at a coincidence. This is my father-in-law posing in front of one in the CBI. Did your grandmother do the Hydraulics? Was your neighbor the pilot? We'll never know.  |

Wow....cool stuff, Bill and Marc...with the P-61 connection. This and that magnificent model floating on FB...I really want to build one of these now. Thanks Marc, I'd say you have to build a Birdcage or wait for the next variant...whatever it is That way you can try the Eduard engine. I wasn't aware of it either. I think I may give it a look. I like that you get replacement cowling with detail. That way you can show things off. Someone is also making a set for behind the engine firewall...the oil tanks and all...and it looks to be pretty nice. May have to do my -1A splayed open. |

Jimmy if that extra area gets resin detail I am pretty sure I'll be doing another one of these. This one all closed up and the other opened p all over the place. Cut out some little access panels and scratch something to see in the holes. And heaven knows I'll have the marking. I just ordered a different set to do an RNZAF bird... the one on the bottom. For discussion purposes only  God you got caught up Andy. Now that the engine issues are taken care of things are starting to roll. |

DAMN YOU JIMMY!  Now I have to buy another Corsair.  At first the $40 price tag made me step back. But, this and the Eduard engine together, even at $12 more than the 2 Vector sets, I think is a netter value considering the possibilities. I guess I'll be looking for a show special price on a Corsair at MosquitoCon |

Sorry about that I know how you feel. Normally, I'd be all like "nah...I just built a Corsair...I need to get some other stuff in" but dang it to heck...that kit is so nice. I want to build one up with folded wings and all the guts hanging out. |

Ha! Like you guys needed any more excuses... That's a cool connection Marc, my grandmother passed away a few years ago as did my neighbor so it will always be one thing to ponder. On a side note, the reason she worked on the hydraulics installations was due to her size...she was short and small and could fit inside the areas of the fuselage, wings, etc. where others couldn't. The stories she could tell...the one I remember most vividly was her saying how dangerous it was working with the fluids and how she got drenched in the cherry-red fluid once when someone tested one of the lines she was working on not realizing it was open. She said she looked like a human Maraschino but fortunately didn't inhale or swallow any of the stuff. |

We've got a couple fellas here up that way. I try to avoid Dallas as much as I can...I've never seen worse driving in my life We will be there next month for the annual visit with Thomas the Train...haha... My wife gets so pissed when she sees anything on TV or whatever that stereotypes Texas like that...because it's nothing like that. Here in Houston we are currently in the midst of the rodeo...where a bunch of pampered city folk pretend they are rugged and cowboy cool for a month...it's freaking hilarious. |

Thanks, Joe. I could probably do it..yeah. My problem is I'm more in it for the painting and weathering...building just gets me there.
I am growing to like to add more and more detail...but I pretty much need simple scratch stuff or aftermarket...then I have to struggle to focus to get through it. I'm scared if I embarked on something like that I'd burn out, put it aside and never finish it.

Marc, that is all amazing work you are doing. It's taking modelling into the stratosphere man. I have no idea how you even see those tiny pieces let alone maneuver them into place. Simply amazing sir!
Now, you guys need to stop all this black widow drooling talk stuff. You're making me want to run out and buy one of those beasts. I told myself after the Typhoon I need to work on normal size models for awhile to get some sanity back. Plus the war department keeps asking where I'm going to put all those oversized models. I got no answers. Stop, stop, stop, STOP!!!

He's already a little crazy with what he does and he doesn't need any help pushing him over the edge. Mark, thanks pal. Bench time waxes and wanes. It'll come back. Rick, after what you just finished, this IS a normal sized model. I just bought some new tweezers and while it may not let do even smaller parts they should help with the size I get down to.
