If I am wrong I apologize in advance. The direction of the swans is what I question. The left side of the caparison with the swans facing the same direction as the horse's head is correct. On the right side the swans face to the rear and I believe this in the world of heraldry is incorrect. To have the heraldic animal facing back was deemed cowardly. Cheers Eh!

On the right side the swans face to the rear and I believe this in the world of heraldry is incorrect. To have the heraldic animal facing back was deemed cowardly. Cheers Eh! Hi Thanks for the input. There are many varied and complex rules regarding heraldry in the medieval times, and indeed still today, and each heraldic device has a"Blazon" which was a written description of the heraldic device and who it belonged to, the Crest and supporters and the Motto, and each item was specific to that person or family or group. The same can be said of colours as well, each colour, shade and pattern are just as specific. with English heraldry the emblem or device should face the same way I.E if its facing the left it always does no matter what side its on. If the device was put on the opposite way it doesnt mean cowardly, no self respecting knight is going to have the device displayed to show everyone else that hes a coward, but it would mean it belonged to someone else, In this case if the swan was to the right with these colours it would be Henry De Lusignon, The swan was quite a popular device in heraldic terms and several families used it with subtle differences, so if the swan was facing forward on both sides of the caparison he would be 2 different people on the battle field depending on what side you saw him. the same applied to heraldic devices from other countries at this time as it was common practice I suppose the best example of this is the Black prince where the coat of arms is actually his fathers Edward III, but he shows a bar with 3 vetical lines which mean "Son Of " but also the 3 leopards face the same way always to the left OK ive waffled on enough thanks for the comment and a good point cheers Paul
