AWESOME! I agree with you about Young Miniatures... have one in stash and I hope to get few more especially US Paratroopers and Nam GIs. Too bad they don't make a WWI Doughboy yet... shared my feedback with them earlier since nobody makes one in 1/9 or 1/10. It is my dream to do an American GI evolution from WWI Doughboy to modern.
Happy to have you aboard!

Off and running AnDee! Good thing about the feathers or you'd have to try to rob some off your Duck!

The bust is amazing as I expected. But seeing on your bench, I realized why you were so determined to launch your personal Polish hussar operation. So, keep it on, Andy, and don't be stingy with details. Cheers, Nicolae

Gave the bust a nice warm bath and sprayed primer last night. I have to say I was very impressed with the primer from MIG AMMO. It sprayed perfectly... better than my previous primers. Closer shot... Can't wait to have it painted next! Thanks for looking!

Mack- LOL I figured black primer is perfect for figures because it will make my job easier painting... shadows or hard to see places will be all right if left in black... better than gray or other colors. Glad you are still watching! John- Thanks buddy! Loved the primer... so easy to spray and it was EASY to clean my AB afterward. FINALLY! I tested this morning using my fingernail scratching the bottom part of base and paint didn't come off. You will like it too... need to buy one in red brown next as I have both black and gray. Dicky- Can't wait to paint those details... it scares me when I get to the part to paint the cat part. God, he do look like our ol' uncle Carl!!! DAMN I didn't realize he was born in 17th century... Thanks mate... happy to have you aboard! #33- He will only smile if I can get him some duck & potatoes along with some beer. Thanks man!

Mr T- LOL! Yep threw paint on it tonight... I am really enjoying this bust. I think I am going to get another bust soon. LOL Painted the feathers with off-white and black... I will highlight with white next. They will look better after dark washes... Used Vallejo Natural Steel as base coat... Basic Skintone, Medium Flesh then Dark Flesh. Then applied thinned Vallejo Oily Steel to tint it down a bit. Finally highlighted with Vallejo Aluminum on some places. I noticed it was nasty airbrushing those three colors from Vallejo... Face painted using Vallejo Face Paint set... I wanted to follow the photo on the box as being chilly. Highlighted with Vallejo Light Flesh and pink is from Vallejo Brown Rose and Salmon Rose. Thanks for looking!

What was the problem Andy?
|
|
|
Post by deafpanzer on Mar 20, 2014 11:26:17 GMT -5
It won't just spray properly. Paint won't come out several times... then it just spit... despite using same mix I use on all Vallejo paints. In the past I used paintbrushes for those metal paints so it was my first time spraying metal paint. My mix was like paint/thinner/retarder at 70/20/10 or something like that until it looks like 2% milk.
What should I have done differently? From now on I will use my faithful paintbrushes for those metal paints.

LOL! It has been fun and easy except for dealing with the feathers. One thing I like about bust... only one or two nights of building then BAM! Its ready to be primed and painted!!!!
And at that scale you can use you AB to paint pretty much except for details.

What the.... YAY! Finally somebody is doing that figure. I always saw completed ones - not uninteresting of course, but a "how to" is even better! And what should I say... That looks really good so far. But I wonder why you didnt use real feathers for the wings.

Deano- Thanks man!!! Happy to have you along as it will be fun even tho its not 1/72 bust. LOL
Tigrazor- Hey man! Glad you are aboard since you enjoy doing busts as much as I do. Funny thing I thought about using real feathers when I worked on the resin feathers. I wonder how easy it will be to find feathers in that color or size. This is a product review so I thought I better keep it OOB if possible. If I could do it again, I might go for real feathers but where can I buy them without ordering online.
Resin feathers are not bad... one broke easily... two broke because of my clumsiness. I am left with one spare feather... say prayers for me that no more will break. LOL

Do as you like of course. Real feathers - good question of course! Sometimes a farmer has some - sounds a bit silly, yes, but thats imho the cheapest ones you can get. Thats the way I got a few peacock feathers for free ;)Another point is a zoo shop. They very often sell small birds like budgies etc, and they lose some. Of course its always a good idea to pour them with alcohol.
