That black air deflector does add a good look to the front of this car James. Funny how the little things can bring so much out in a build.

I need to learn this sorcery! I actually learned this just this year. I can give a quick step by step process but I am no means an expert. This is assuming you have already corrected any issues with the body like mold lines and other issues. Sand body at 1000 grit to even out any repairs made like the removal of mold lines and or filling holes etc 2 coats of primer (my current preference is Mr Color 1500 grey) Light wet sand 2000 grit to knock down any dust or any rough surface on primer 3-4 coats of primary color starting with light dust coat, and increasing amount of paint on each coat with the last 2 being wet coats let gas out (fully cure) this will change depending on paint wet sand as Joe described above 4,6,8,10 and 12k grit 2-3 coats of clear coat of your choice same wet sanding process as above Then I use Tamiya's 3 step polishing compounds - course, fine, finish Thanks for typing this out! I'm short on some of these necessary supplies...going to need to place an order somewhere.

I plan on finding some cheap bodies on ebay or something to practice on. Was hoping to finish up the body the last two nights but the carbon decals I ordered were not the right color so its back to waiting for supplies. It says pewter/black but it has this weird brownish tint to it. So I will try the tamiya decals

Tamiya decals from Amazon came in. This was my very first attempt at this sorta thing. Something about the the amazing skills on this forum has me trying new things I guess. Try as I may, I could not get every wrinkle out. but I am hoping it gets better as it dries. Plus the clear on top should help. I think it looks good for a first try! Hood next, then clear and polish!

Carbon fibre looks good. Goes well with the body colour.

Laying out a decal that big is a chore in itself! Great job on this! I really like the carbon fiber look

Carbon fibre looks good. Goes well with the body colour. Yea, I think so too. ALL blue was too much. Loving the carbon fiber on there Same! Laying out a decal that big is a chore in itself! Great job on this! I really like the carbon fiber look I think I did pretty good for a first try. There were still some wrinkles I couldn't get out, but they went away when dry. Pretty happy with it. The hood is next, and will be more difficult.

Carbon decals have a tendency to be pretty tricky for some reason. You’ve done a great job on the roof and it looks awesome with the blue. Fantastic work

Well, it isnt very good, but its on there. The hood was WAY harder than the roof. The body lines, the hood scoop.. The hood pins. Try as I did, I could not get it right. Apparently I also managed to damage a corner. But, I'm leaving it this way. Honestly, it was my best effort. And I am really jsut a beginner in all of this so I should expect to be bad at things. Improvement will come. Plus, the hood is removable I can always try again after more practice. She's gonna clean up something nice once I get some clear on her.

If it makes you feel any better it photographs well. Looks super cool. The blue and carbon look great together too. I dig the mock-up.

There’s not a chance in ‘H E Double Hockey Sticks’ that I would attempt carbon fibre on the complex curves of that hood. Good job!

My sentiments exactly! With the complex shape of the hood I think you did an outstanding job applying the carbon decal

So its really just the botched corner. I'm kind of surprised!

It really looks good on there. I have not tried carbon fiber yet, but need to when I replicate my 1:1 Challenger. How hard was it to apply?

It really looks good on there. I have not tried carbon fiber yet, but need to when I replicate my 1:1 Challenger. How hard was it to apply? I think the trick is finding out what decals like what setting solution. I used warm water to first apply decal. Applied Tamiya Mark Fit to the hood and laid it down. It had a TON of wrinkles so applied Mark Fit on top and jsut light rolled them out with differnt size q-tips. Starting from the center (or in this case as close to center) outward. Work quick, dont use too much decal solution to avoid tearing which I have still not perfected haha. When cutting out the decal, I also cut on the outside of line to make it a tiny bit larger which I think helps you roll the decal over the edge. At least for the hood that would apply. Not always every part. Thats about as much as I can tell anyone. Im assuming it shrinks a bit as it dries, which helped. Hopefully a few clear coats will help as well. Ill touch up the botched corner with black to hide it.

If not, I suggest you clear over some of the extra decal first to see if compatible with your thinner or reducer. Lay first coat lightly, second coat, go a little heavier. If all goes well with no wrinkling/ lifting, then you should be able to repeat on model. I hope this helps you.

A little test fitment. A previous forum member mentioned checking if the seats fit since I have changed them out.

Man this is looking SWELL!! Fantastic work on the carbon fiber decals and smoothing everything out despite the torn corner. Some VERY good work going on in this thread. +1 Karma to you for taking the time to explain the process.

Thought about cutting a small triangle shaped decal to cover up this mistake. Opted to paint instead. I think it will be less noticeable. Getting the rest of these parts painted as well

Good idea with the black… not vey noticeable… especially given its location.
