I'm on board with the whole never ending "to do" list aaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllll too well James. It's like hydra.....you take care of one thing and 15 other things pop up. Sorry to hear the luck on the torn "11" decal but also know you and your modeling skillset will prevail. This is a totally cool project that you're working on with some very good results. Looking forward to the next updates buddy.

Hmmm. Common Tamiya decal crack. Not a fan. lol. If you want I can check my decal binder for that 11. I built the Bucknum car and I’m almost positive I have that 11 stashed away. Anyways. Awesome update and that is all looking really fantastic. You’re making some headway now

James I've been working down my Honey To Do List for more then 40 years and no matter how hard I try, I can't get off of page 1. It's just amazing at how many To Do things wives can come up with that never occurred to me as needing anything to do if you get my point.
The rising sun decal looks nearly perfect. It's the way that the front nose cone is laying that seems to be the only issue I can see. As for the #1 decal cracking could very well be just old age. I can attest to the fact that old age just causes things to break or slow down for no other reason known to mankind. if the decals aren't sealed you could try soaking it and see if you can move the top pcs some. Touch up with Tamiya Nato Black is pretty close to the Black color. Hopefully one of the guys here has an extra decal. Last case scenario is making one yourself which I've never attempted successfully.

You’re making some headway now I've never experienced this before, so if its common, I guess I have just been lucky. I appreciate the offer also, but I do have a spare decal sheet. She's really starting to come together. For engine visibility the rear cowl is removable. Hope you tackle the decal issue soon and can move on.

I don’t know if it’s a common issue exactly but I’ve sure had a fair amount of issues with in the box Tamiya decals. I search aftermarket for every kit unless they’re cartograf. Silly added expense? Maybe. But it makes me much happier. lol.
As for decal removal can you suspend the boxes in some warm water to soak just the 11 but not the rising sun?

If it's a Tamiya decal you can scrape it off with your thumbnail. Gently.

There's a LOT of truth to that around this house James and that comment gave me a good chuckle.
Way to go on straightening out that decal issue.

Made an attempt to weather the wheels/tires to look race used. Used this photo from the Mexico GP in 65 (which is the the kit reference) and I guess it looks decent. Also, in the photo you can see the rear suspension in the race. Clearly shows the shock body to be steel colored. However the kit instructions say to paint them Orange. The newer photos of the car have it in red. Very strange. Ill be going steel colored.

I think you got the tires looking great with the dull darker appearance. When cleaning the BF Goodrich T/A's on our Vette before a show the sidewalls and white lettering look identical.

Nice update! Wheels and tires are looking excellent. Those restored cars are always way different from what the cars were in period.

James, excellent update. I always love opening posts of a build thread with enough history to make the build way more interesting. And a sure bonus is having reference pics posted in updates.
The tires certainly looked used so you succeeded with your weathering. The springs as Kyle alluded to where most certainly polished steel from the factory and left that way. But most restorations try to add a touch of color and paint the springs as it's the easiest thing to do.

Its also weird Tamiya would get something so easy to see wrong haha. James, excellent update. I always love opening posts of a build thread with enough history to make the build way more interesting. Welll, the tooling has been around since the 90s. Maybe back then they were that color. Doubt Tamiya has updated anything in these later boxes including colors. One of The nice thing about race cars (at least for me) is they were constantly changing. So however I build them it’s not necessarily wrong. I like your choice to go with the original look.

I'd say that you're pretty dang close on the tire sidewall weathering James. It's no big surprise to me that the instructions would have you paint the shocks that color. I rarely use the instructions for a painting guide on anything as I've come to rely on references primarily and only referring to the kit instructions when nothing else is available. Even then, if all I have is the instructions, you'll find me taking an artistic license at times.

James, Slow but steady going is way better then no progress. She's coming along quite nicely as your on the final lap with the finish line in sight.

The mirror shine on the finish looks amazing! It's coming together wonderfully! So I was contemplating covering this in matte finish. Im not sure the gloss is accurate after a long dirty race. Still undecided.

james, The finish is purely up to you. I personally go for a museum car display, so it's polished to the nth degree. If you're looking for end of a race, then you're going to have to do some serious weathering besides a matt finish.
